The collection consists of 44 color 35mm slides taken during the period August-September 28, 1950 on R/V HORIZON during the Scripps Institution of Oceanography MidPac Expedition. The slides include images of R/V HORIZON, expedition participants, equipment, work at sea, the Biniki Island and the Hawaiian Islands. Photographs of expeditions participants include images of Ned Barr, Robert Dietz, Robert Dill, Jeffery D. Frautschy, Ed Hamilton, Arthur Maxwell, H. William Menard, Russell Raitt, Roger Revelle, and James M. Snodgrass. Images of equipment include photographs of bathythermograph, hydrophones, Kullenberg Corer, and Phleger Corer.

He served on several committees of the National Academy of Sciences relating to environmental issues during the 1970's.
